My Op-Ed was about fracking and how it is having a negative effective on our environment and how we can find a better solution. In my poster I put images in it that showed some of the problems with fracking, the main focus was what it does to the environment. Such things would be the fact that if there is poor manufacturing in the pipes that carry the oil, there are chances that the pipe will break and oil will be displaced in a towns water supply. Another huge part was the fact that we only have a finite supply left and when we run out we will be stuck and in big trouble. The solution to the problem was to use the oil that we have to make lots of solar panels for the time being until we could find a new energy source.

Go Solar or Go Extinct
By: Reuben Barnes
Because natural gas extraction has a limited shelf life and has proven to have toxic effects on our environment we need to find a solution that will cease the process of our elimination. Hydraulic fracking has now been around for quite a long time. Fracking consists of any oil company who finds an area of land that contains a large amount of oil. They then drill into the earth and pipe the hole so that the oil can flow through it. This process involves water that is mixed with chemicals which can be another problem in multiple ways.
The U.S. has continuously been fracking in various areas all over the states, and the effects have been quite negative. One of the problems of natural fracking is that when the oil is collected by all sorts of oil companies all over America it can accidentally leak into a town’s water supply. This many people to get very sick, if they have no clue that the oil is seeping into their water. Another problem is the fact that the process uses pressurized water to bring the oil and natural gasses to the surface. In some cases an oil company is so desperate that they will use up a towns water supply ("The day that we ran out of water I turned on my faucet and nothing was there and at that moment I knew the whole of Barnhart was down the tubes," she said, blinking back tears. "I went: 'dear God help us. That was the first thought that came to mind."). A tragedy like this has happened in Texas; the oil fracking caused the loss of their water which did not only affect the people but this action caused even more troubling disasters.
Texas’s fracking caused human suffering and environmental destruction which was a huge impact on the community. The cows and farm animals began to perish due to the amount of water that the oil company was using to pressure the natural gasses and oils to the surface. Then crops began to die and the company that was fracking requested for more water only so that they could continue what they had started. One other negative property of this is the limited amount of these natural resources and we are using them up.
Each year the U.S. uses 18.83 million barrels of oil a day; this is too much for us to continue using it for the smaller things such as cars and our faster transportation. Oil is very important for the whole community and in our lives; it runs our cars, factories, etc… it is one of our main supporters. However, at this rate it is estimated by researchers that in 40 years all of the oil will be consumed(There are an estimated 1.3 trillion barrels of proven oil reserve left in the world’s major fields, which at present rates of consumption will be sufficient to last 40 years.). If we can find a way to not use all of the natural fossil fuels then it can result in a much cleaner and reliable energy source that could last us much longer than 40 years.
The solution in mind is to use the oil that we have now on factories, however these factories will only have one purpose. Their sole purpose will be to make solar panels, as many solar panels that we can make that will be able to go on cars and houses and factories. This energy source is something that can that we can use as a species. Each day, the sun will be able to charge and help run the process of our necessities for unimaginable amounts of time. This source does not create waste so it will not cause a problem when it is in use.
The process of the solar panels may use up a significant amount of oil and effect our environment in negative ways. However this solar energy would never run out; the energy is created by the sun and that isn’t going to run out any time soon. The small cost of hurting our world and then having a new energy source will be better than completely destroying our earth and then being completely stuck with no energy source. This clean and reusable energy would have a huge positive impact on the people and also the wildlife, crops, anything that needs the ground and the air to live would not get polluted. Each piece of evidence points towards one simple answer, solar energy will be the next step in our survival to the future.

Project Reflection
This project was all about each student choosing an issue that was currently effecting the society today, when a subject that piqued their interest was found multiple steps then took place. The first step was to begin researching the subject and getting all of the information possible and that could support your argument. Once that was done we had to write a paper with all of the evidence that you had collected, at the end of the paper it was required to cite all of the websites that you had used so that people knew what you had looked up. The next step was to then create a poster that fully explained your subject and showed some of the evidence that you wrote about. The final step was to create an artist statement that was just a short summary of your perspective.
I used perspective for both of the sections, this was a very important requirement for me to finish my paper and also then present it when the exhibition came. This was important because I needed to show the different sides of the story, for example if we did stop using natural oils and gasses then it is guaranteed that the oil companies would complain and not be satisfied. This could be solved by them instead be selling solar panels when they are made.
I believe that I did best on showing the Purpose and Focus section, I would say this because while doing the project I put in lots of examples that were proving and showing what it was I was trying to say in my paper. I believe that the section I did not do the best in would be organization because I do believe that the way that I placed my evidence was a little bit all over the place and could have used some revisions. Out of this whole project I would most likely give myself a B+, this is because I had revised and made my paper much better the second time and this grade seems like it would be a very reasonable grade.
If I had another week to work on this project then I believe that I would revise everything such as the evidence that I used, I would try to find more cites that I could include in my paper.
