Was Julius Caesar a Hero or Tyrant Reuben Barnes
Julius Caesar lived in Rome from 100bc to 44bc. This question is important because have had trouble deciding if he was a hero or a tyrant because he has done good things but also very bad things. The way that I decide if someone is a hero or tyrant is to look at the things that they did and which one affected the community the most. I think that Julius Caesar was a tyrant because the biggest thing that he did was very bad and if affected the community the most. And I have this info in a packet that was about Julius Caesar and his failures and accomplishments.
So I think that Julius Caesar because he mostly did bad things and not as much great things, three examples are he was too eager to become king, he took too much land by force, and then the biggest thing he did that was bad was that he destroyed the system of Rome. The quote that supports this is “His taking control of Rome by force had destroyed the very system which he had wanted to succeed.” So this quote supports my idea that Caesar was a tyrant because it is saying that he has destroyed Rome’s system and that he caused its destruction. Another reason that supports my idea is that he took a lot of land by force and in that process I am sure that he killed many and was not very merciful. One of the biggest places that he conquered was Gaul and he did not like them so he destroyed them in battle and called them the barbarians. And then there is the fact that he wanted to be king too soon and the way he did it, Julius Caesar wanted to be king so bad that he took his army and went back to Rome and went against the senate to fight his way to the throne. This was bad because he was taking away the senate’s power and that was not very good.
So Julius destroyed the system of Rome and that was the cause of its downfall, the same quote still supports me and I think that these are the reasons that because of this he was a tyrant, first he was going to give all the power to the people and take the senate’s power away, then he was going to rule all by himself. These are things that would make a tyrant. Then there is the fact that he took too much land and did it with force, evidence is the packet that I have and it has a map that shows the large areas that he took by force. Three examples that show that this was not the right thing to do was that he did this cruelly and not very nicely, he only thought of himself and did not care of any other person, and lastly he wanted to control all of Europe eventually. Then there is the last thing that he wanted to have that I thought made him a tyrant, he wanted to be king, evidence for this is the packet once more and it will say these things. So three points that show my thesis is that he was going to kill all of his enemies so that no one stood in his way and also he was not giving his army to the senate even though it was the right thing to do and finally he was to proud of himself. So these are the things that I think made him corrupt and he became a tyrant.
So I believe that people should know if Caesar was a hero or a tyrant because I don’t think that everyone should just hear about the good things that he wanted to do but the things that he did wrong and who he did wrong. For example he would be considered a terrorist in this present day because he would have been invading places and not stopping. Some questions to think of are do you think that it was heroic of him to take so much land and that expanded Rome, but think of the other people that used to be there are they all dead or where they forced out of their homes and forced to live elsewhere? Another thing that he did was why was he so eager to be king did he have plans to do something else, maybe conquer somewhere else or maybe destroy Rome. And my last question is why did he not think about Rome if he loved it so much and how did he let it slip through his hands, I just really don’t think he would be a good king. So I think it is important to think of the things that he did and what you think of him.
